Karoo Animal Protection Society

Covering vast and often overlooked parts of the Little Karoo and Eastern Cape, the Karoo Animal Protection Society reaches animals and communities that would otherwise go without care. Powered entirely by volunteers, KAPS brings critical veterinary support, education, and compassion to those most in need.

About the charity:
The Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) is the only organization operating across nearly 5,000 square kilometres and extending into the Eastern Cape, providing mobile veterinary services to animals in the impoverished rural communities of the Little Karoo. Families struggling to feed their children often keep dogs chained and fed only scraps like potato peelings. KAPS provides services including emergency response, dipping, deworming, feeding, medical treatment, sterilization, rescue, and rehoming throughout the year. The organization operates without office premises or paid staff and has achieved remarkable success in transforming lives through intensive mass sterilization clinics and community education programs. KAPS also supports the small and emerging farmers who often lack the knowledge to care for their working animals, such as horses and the donkeys that pull the region's traditional carts. The vast rural terrain requires KAPS vehicles to travel thousands of kilometres monthly, making fuel and maintenance significant operational expenses for this entirely volunteer-driven organization.
